This is the song that made me a Merle Haggard fan for life. It was his first #1 record in late ‘66/early ’67. The fugitive on the run/ex-con songs make up the foundation of Hag’s mythology and cannot be overestimated. Arguably, except for the simple dark poetry of Hank Williams Sr., Merle’s songs are the pinnacle of songwriting in the entire country genre, period. As in, none better. If you disagree, brother, you’re walkin’ on the fightin’ side of me(couldn’t resist that one). The magic of these early Haggard songs is they are so full of rich detail, they will pull you out of your own existence, be it action-packed or humdrum, and you can feel the sometimes dire circumstances of the characters. I’m delighted to finally find this video as it’s one of the first I went looking for when I discovered YouTube. "Merle Haggard- I'm a Lonesome Fugitive"
It’s so refreshing to see this clip since we’ve all had our senses bludgeoned by the megawatt top-selling version by Whitney Houston. The original version here scales it back down to a warm person-to-person level. With Dolly’s larger-than-life physical attributes, it’s easy to forget what a world-class songwriter she is. This is a nearly perfect song. Dolly’s genuine sincerity keeps it from veering into mawkish sentimentality. I find this to be vastly superior than Dolly’s remake nearly a decade later for “The Best Little Whorehouse in Texas” soundtrack, even though said re-make went straight to #1 again. This clip also gives you a pristine look at one of the most beautiful women to ever come out of Nashville before she let the West Coast plastic surgeons nip and tuck her into that “stretched-too-tight” look favored by far too many West Coast ladies of a certain age. "Dolly Parton - I Will Always Love You"
